Heat pump installation replaces your old system with a new, properly sized heat pump, installed and registered by our team. Southeast is a Daikin Premier Dealer serving Buford and the surrounding communities, and every installation starts with a free in-home estimate.
What does a heat pump installation include?
A heat pump gives you heating and cooling from one system. An installation usually means a new outdoor unit, a new indoor air handler with electric heat strips (backup heaters for the coldest nights), a matched thermostat, and the refrigerant lines, wiring, drain and pad that tie it all together. Sometimes the existing air handler or ductwork can stay. Often the whole system is replaced so the parts are matched and covered under one warranty.
At Southeast, installation also includes the work around the equipment: a Manual J load calculation, removal and disposal of the old system, the permit when one is required, startup and commissioning, and manufacturer warranty registration. Those aren't add-ons. They're the difference between a system that's installed and one that's installed right.
When is it time to install a new heat pump?
We don't use age alone to answer this. An older heat pump that was installed well may have plenty of life left. A much newer one that was oversized and poorly charged may be the better replacement candidate. When we evaluate a system in Buford, Cumming, Alpharetta, Braselton or Hoschton, we look at:
- The immediate repair cost, and whether that repair truly restores reliable operation.
- Installation quality, including sizing, refrigerant charge, duct connections and electrical work.
- Overall condition and how likely the next failure is.
- Warranty coverage and whether parts are still available.
- Comfort, humidity, airflow and noise complaints that a repair won't fix.
- Whether the system is sized correctly for the home and matches the ductwork.
- How long you plan to keep the home, and whether cash or monthly payments matter more to you.
Common triggers we see: a compressor or reversing valve failure on an older unit, a second major repair in a few years, backup heat strips running most of the winter, or a homeowner who's tired of one room always being cold. If you're weighing the decision, our repair-or-replace guide lays out the logic. If you want the evaluation done in your home, request a free replacement estimate.
What goes wrong with a bad heat pump installation?
Heat pumps are less forgiving of installation mistakes than a simple furnace, because the same equipment has to perform in July and in January. The installation problems that most often lead to early replacement tend to be the same ones:
- Guessed sizing. Replacing "like for like" without a load calculation often leaves a home with an oversized system that short cycles, runs loud and never wrings the humidity out of the air.
- Wrong refrigerant charge. Too much or too little refrigerant hurts capacity in both modes and shortens compressor life.
- Duct mismatch. New equipment pushed through undersized or leaky ducts can't deliver the airflow it was designed for.
- Heat strips left unchecked. Backup heat that's wired or staged wrong runs far more than it should.
- No permit, no registration. Skipping a required permit or the warranty registration can leave you without the coverage you paid for.
Every one of these is avoidable, which is why our process is built around them.
How does Southeast install a heat pump?
- Free in-home estimate. A comfort consultant looks at the existing system, ductwork, electrical and the rooms that give you trouble. No pressure, and no guessing over the phone.
- Manual J load calculation. This is the industry method for sizing a system to the home, using square footage, insulation, windows, orientation and more. It's how we avoid the guessed-size problem.
- Written proposal. You see the actual proposed models, matched-system efficiency, the tier, the labor warranty and the price, plus financing options if you want them.
- Permit. We pull the required replacement permit, and the permit cost is included in the quoted price.
- Installation day. Our installers remove and dispose of the old equipment, set the new system, connect refrigerant lines, electrical and drain, then pressure-test and charge the system to the manufacturer's specification.
- Startup and commissioning. We run the system in heating and cooling, check the defrost cycle and heat strips, verify airflow and walk you through the thermostat.
- Registration and follow-up. We register the manufacturer warranty for you. If a problem is caused by our workmanship, Southeast will return and correct it at no charge.
Which heat pump tier is right for my home?
Daikin is our primary brand, and we're a Daikin Premier Dealer. All new Daikin systems we install use R-32 refrigerant; our R-32 article explains what that means for you. Daikin's central lineup comes in three tiers, and the tier you choose sets your Southeast labor warranty:
- Single-stage. Straightforward on/off comfort. One-year Southeast labor warranty. Qualifying single-stage equipment carries 12-year parts coverage and a six-year unit replacement warranty, subject to Daikin's terms.
- Two-stage. Two operating levels, so the system can run at a lower setting on mild days instead of full blast. Three-year Southeast labor warranty.
- Daikin Fit variable-speed. An inverter system that adjusts its output to match what the house needs at that moment. Five-year Southeast labor warranty. Qualifying Fit equipment carries 12-year parts and up to 12-year unit replacement coverage, subject to terms. See our Daikin Fit page.
The Fit isn't automatically right for every home. Ductwork, zoning, controls and budget all matter, and we'll tell you when a single-stage or two-stage system is the smarter buy. The proposal names the actual models and matched efficiency, because a generic rating doesn't tell you what your system will do.
What does a new heat pump cost?
It depends on the home: system size from the Manual J, the tier, matched efficiency, ductwork and electrical needs, where the equipment sits, and the warranty you choose. We don't publish cash prices because every home is different, and we'd rather give you a real number after seeing the house than a guess online. The estimate is free and there's no obligation.
What we can tell you now:
- Financing through Service Finance includes 18 months at 0% interest, 12 months with no payments and no interest, and 180-month terms at 9.99%. Payment examples run from $99 a month for a complete system, with credit approval; see financing terms.
- Current offers include up to $1,000 off a new system. Some restrictions may apply; see promotions.
- Removal, disposal, standard startup and any required permit are included in the quoted price.
- A new install pairs well with the Southeast Family Plan: two visits a year, standard 1-inch pleated filters, coil and drain cleaning, 15% off qualifying repairs and priority service, at $149 a year for the first system.
