Mini-split replacement swaps a worn-out or failing ductless system for a new one, sized and installed by our team. Southeast replaces mini-splits across Buford and the surrounding communities, and every replacement starts with a free in-home estimate.
What does mini-split replacement include?
A ductless mini-split has two main parts. The outdoor unit holds the compressor, the part that moves refrigerant and does the heavy lifting. One or more indoor units, usually called heads, hang on a wall or ceiling and deliver the air. A refrigerant line set, a drain line and a wiring bundle connect them through a small hole in the wall. Replacing the system means a new outdoor unit and new indoor heads that the manufacturer has matched to work together.
Depending on what we find, replacement can also include a new line set, a new drain line or condensate pump, a new electrical disconnect, and a new pad or wall bracket for the outdoor unit. An existing line set can sometimes be reused. Often it can't, especially when the old system leaked or ran on a different refrigerant. We'll tell you which it is after we look, not before.
Replacement is different from adding ductless cooling to a room that never had it. For a first-time install, start with ductless AC installation or our mini-split installation page.
When should a mini-split be replaced instead of repaired?
We don't use age alone to decide. An older mini-split that was installed well and kept clean may have plenty of life left. A newer one that was sized wrong or installed carelessly may be the better replacement candidate. When we evaluate a ductless system in Buford, Sugar Hill, Suwanee or Flowery Branch, we look at:
- The immediate repair cost, and whether that repair truly restores reliable operation.
- Installation quality, including sizing, refrigerant charge, line-set work and head placement.
- Overall condition and how likely the next failure is.
- Warranty coverage and whether parts are still available for that model.
- Comfort problems the system never solved, like a room that's always muggy or never quite cool.
- Whether the system is sized correctly for the space it serves.
- How long you plan to keep the home, and whether cash or monthly payments matter more to you.
The replacement conversations we have most often start with a failed compressor, a refrigerant leak on a system that's expensive to keep charged, a second major repair in a few years, or a multi-zone system with more than one head acting up. Parts that are discontinued or slow to arrive push the answer the same way. Our repair-or-replace guide lays out the logic, or book a mini-split repair visit and we'll give you a straight answer.
What goes wrong when a mini-split is replaced badly?
Mini-splits are precise systems, and small shortcuts on replacement day show up as big problems later. The mistakes that most often send a "new" system back onto the repair list:
- Reusing a bad line set. Old oil, debris or a hidden leak in the copper lines can contaminate a brand-new system.
- Skipping the pressure test and vacuum. Air and moisture left in the lines cause acid and early compressor failure. A nitrogen pressure test and a deep vacuum are not optional steps.
- Guessed sizing. Swapping "like for like" without a load calculation can leave a room with a head that short cycles and never wrings out the humidity.
- Loose flare fittings. The flared copper connections at each unit are the most common leak point on a mini-split. They have to be made carefully and tightened to spec.
- A drain that doesn't drain. A condensate line without proper slope, or a pump that was never installed, ends up as water on your wall.
- No permit, no registration. Skipping a required permit or the manufacturer warranty registration can leave you without the coverage you paid for.
Each of these is avoidable, and our replacement process is built to avoid them.
How does Southeast replace a mini-split?
- Free in-home estimate. A comfort consultant looks at the existing system, where the heads and outdoor unit sit, the line-set route, the drain and the electrical. No guessing over the phone.
- Manual J load calculation. This is the industry method for sizing a system to the space, using square footage, insulation, windows, orientation and more. Ductless heads come in specific capacities, so getting the load right matters even more than with a central system.
- Written proposal. You get the actual model numbers for the new outdoor unit and each head, what's being replaced and what's staying (line set, drain, disconnect, bracket), and one price, plus financing options.
- Permit when the job calls for one. A swap can need a permit just like a first install. We pull it ourselves, and the fee is already inside the quoted price.
- Replacement day. Our installers recover the old refrigerant properly, remove and dispose of the old equipment, set the new outdoor unit and heads, run or replace the line set, make and tighten the flare connections, pressure-test with nitrogen, pull a deep vacuum, and charge the system to the manufacturer's specification.
- Commissioning every zone. We bring each new head online in cooling and heating, check temperatures at every head, confirm the outdoor unit is talking to each zone, make sure every drain flows, and go over the new controls with you, since they won't work like the old ones.
- New warranty, registered. A new system means a new manufacturer warranty, and we handle the registration for you. If a problem is caused by our workmanship, Southeast returns and corrects it at no charge.
Which Daikin mini-split will we recommend?
Daikin is our primary brand, and we're a Daikin Premier Dealer. Daikin Entra and Oterra are the ductless lines we install, and all new Daikin systems we install use R-32 refrigerant. Our R-32 article explains what that means for you. Which line fits depends on the rooms, the number of zones and your priorities, and the proposal names the actual models and capacities so you're never comparing a generic label. Read more on our Daikin Entra and Oterra page. We service all major brands, so if your current system isn't a Daikin, that doesn't change how we evaluate it.
What does a replacement mini-split cost?
It depends on the number of zones and heads, the capacity each one needs, how far the line set runs and whether it's replaced, the electrical work, mounting, condensate handling, line-hide covers and the permit. We don't quote mini-split projects online because every home is different, and we'd rather give you a real number after seeing the house. The estimate is free and there's no obligation.
What's already settled:

- Hauling away the old outdoor unit and heads is part of the job: removal, disposal, standard startup and any required permit are all inside the quoted price.
- Your new system can go straight onto the Southeast Family Plan, which more than 1,000 homeowners already use: $149 a year for the first system and $109 for each additional one, with two visits a year, drain and coil cleaning, priority service and 15% off qualifying repairs.
